TENT or PETIT POINT
bring the thread out the right-hand side work a stitch diagonally upwards over one canvas thread intersection, pass the needle diagonally down wards behind one horizontal and two
vertical canvas threads and bring throught in readiness for next stitch.
The second row is worked from left to right, the direction of the stitches is the same as the previous row but the needle is passed, diagonally upwards.
All stitches should slope in the same direction. The stitches on the reverse side are longer and slope more than on the correct side.
RUNNING STITCH
Pass the needle over and under the fabric, making the upper stitches should also be of the upper stitches.
STRAIGHT STITCH
This is shown as single spaced stitches worked either in a rectangular or irregular manner.
CHAIN STITCH
Bring the thread out at the top of the line and hold down with left thumb.
Insert the needle again where it emerged and bring the point out a short distance away.
Put the thread through, keeping the working thread under the needle point.
SATIN STITCH
is made up of straight stitches worked closely together across the shape.
Care must be taken to keep a good edge.
Do not make the stitches too long, otherwise they are liable to be pulled out of position.
LONG & SHORT STITCH
In the first row the stiches are alternaly long and short, closely follow the outline of the shape.
The stitches in the following rows are even in size worked to achieve a smooth appearance.
SPLIT STITCH
Bring the thread through and make a small stitches over the line of the design, piercing the working thread with needle.
Split stitch maybe used as a tilling were a fine, flat surface is required.
HALF CROSS STITCH
Bring the thread through at the righ-hand side.
Insert the needle one thread down and one thread to the left, so forming a half cross.
This forms a small straight stitch on the back of the work.
This stitch maybe worked from right to left of left to right, but all stitches must lie in the same directions.
FRENCH KNOTS
Bring the thread out at the required position, hold the thread down with the left thumb and encircle the thread twice with the needle.
Still holding the thread firmly with your thumb, twist the needle back to the starting point and insert it close to where the thread first emerged.
Pull thread through to the back and secure for a single french knot or pass onto the position of the next stitch.
STEM STITCH
Work from left to right taking regular, small stitches along the line of the design.
The thread always emerge on the left side of the previous stitch.
BACK STITCH
Bring the thread through on the stitch line, then take a small backward stitch through the fabric.
Bring the needle through again a little in front of the first stitch, take another stitch, inserting the needle at the point where it first came through.
For back stitch on canvas work in the same way over the number of threads required.
BUTTON HOLE STITCH
Bring the thread out on the lower line, insert the needles in position in the upper line, taking a straight downward stitch with the thread under the needle point.
Pull up the stitch to form a loop and repeat.
CROSS STITCH
Bring the thread throught at the lower right-hand side, insert the needle one block up and one block to the left and bring out 1 block down, this forming a half cross, continue in this way to
the end of the row.
Complete the upper half of all crosses should lie in the same direction.
